DIY Medical Scrub Cap with Buttons
ORIGINALLY POSTED ON MAY 1, 2020
Again, major thanks to Katie Kaddidlehopper’s blog for the original pattern and tutorial on the Reversible Scrub Caps.
As noted in my original post, I updated her original pattern in the below PDFs, including adding an alternate version with a 1/2″ wider band. Those same, free patterns will work with this scrub cap variation that includes buttons on the side and replaces bias tape for ribbon ties. Video Tutorial available! Check it out!
As of this post, I’ve made close to 100 scrub caps and through the process with the help and suggestions from the amazing crafting community and comments on my original post.
Let’s walk through some of those changes!
Adding Buttons to the Sides
After my first dozen or so that went out, I received feedback from the doctors and nurses about adding buttons to the side. Since they were wearing their masks for upwards of 12+ hours daily, the strain on their ears was intense. The buttons helped to alleviate the strain, while also giving me the chance to add some fun buttons to liven up the look a bit.
Depending on preference, I included two button placement locations.
Eliminate Bias Tape, Add Ribbon Ties to the Back
As I was working on so many of these scrub caps, I realized that to be as efficient as possible, while also saving on materials, I needed to eliminate the need for bias tape. Admittedly, I do like the look of bias tape more but I ran out of all the packaged bias tape I had on hand and really didn’t want to add more time to my process by making my own.
Acornandthimbleco on instagram used these templates to make scrub caps without the bias tape and I took her lead to do the same with mine. Personally, I think they are even easier to make and still look pretty dang good. With the addition of the buttons, they are no longer reversible but I believe the trade-offs are worth it (for the maker and the end user).
